Can we start categorizing these discussion pages? It is easier to read ideas/comments under subheadings than a wall of text. I'm taking the liberty of starting it off... Jmaliakal 00:28, 11 October 2010 (EDT)

Purpose of the Main Page

should we tailor our main page for the members of the Buzzpedia (i.e. for adding content), or should we tailor it to the end user, someone coming just to read the articles and gain knowlegde? JPMorgan 12:41, 27 October 2010 (EDT)

I think we should tailor our main page for members of buzzpedia only. Sandra

I like the new panorama. It adds to the main page and helps us tailor to people outside the Georgia Tech community. Dn3 15:29, 6 December 2010 (EST)

Main Page Display Ideas

  • On the idea of category navigation (having several category links on the main page) should we create three master categories (the ones which we started with such as Athletics, Campus Buildings and Environment, Traditions and Campus Life) then go from there? Or should we create more general categories such as people, places, and events? Sroka
  • I think we should start out with an alphabetical list of topics first. Then, we can try to group them based on whatever categories we think might work. It may be hard to begin with set categories without knowing all of the topics. Mhotle 12:54, 10 October 2010 (EDT)
  • As for the main page construction, I would like to see an image or a cycle of images. Maybe we can collaboratively photoshop some collages representing a few topics covered in Buzzpedia, then provide some links to those topics in a short description of the picture. Kdease3 12:55, 10 October 2010 (EDT)
  • That's a great idea, but might be a lot of work. If you need anyone to photoshop I volunteer to try and make it happen if we choose to go with the cycle of images route. Fradac
  • When we get to the point where we have a list of "approved" or "good" topics we could cycle the images that appear on those topics. Sroka
  • I like the new page design! I still want to see some images though, can we play around with the idea a little more?--Kdease3 19:25, 24 October 2010 (EDT)
  • I agree that the page design is looking great. What type of images can we use, and what would be the best arrangement? Dn3 22:29, 24 October 2010 (EDT)
    • I am still playing around with it to see what I can do to make it better. I will look into using some images. Are you talking about using images like that are used elsewhere on the Buzzpedia, or using static images? JPMorgan 10:12, 25 October 2010 (EDT)
      • I suppose any images could be used, but the ones that are elsewhere on Buzzpedia will probably be the most relevant. I am in favor of using images if it will keep organization while making the front page more appealing, but not if it hinders the organization that we already have. Dn3 17:02, 25 October 2010 (EDT)
        • agreed. we do have the eventual goal being to make the front page both user friendly and "pretty" for lack of a better word. but I think that ease of use certainly comes first. JPMorgan 11:30, 25 October 2010 (EDT)
  • I really like the "Featured Article" addition. It makes the page much more appealing! Dn3 21:51, 27 October 2010 (EDT)
    • Thanks!! I am still trying to get all the things to line up, but I like the design pretty well. If anyone wants to take a crack at making all the parts of the tables align to the top of the section, be my guest. JPMorgan 22:00, 27 October 2010 (EDT)
      • I fixed some of the alignment issues. I'll try to work on it a bit more later. Taylorskalyo 11:34, 5 November 2010 (EDT)
        • Was it the "valign="top"" thing? Thanks you so much!!! it looks so much better!!! JPMorgan 12:03, 5 November 2010 (EDT)
        • You're welcome. After a little more work, I was able to fix the rest of the alignment issues, and I cleaned up the code some as well.Taylorskalyo 16:44, 5 November 2010 (EDT)
        • Looks fantastic!! JPMorgan 21:07, 5 November 2010 (EDT)
  • JP- Are you having to manually change the article and picture every day? --Kdease3 01:39, 2 November 2010 (EDT)
    • Yeah. But it isn't too bad. Takes maybe 5 mins. I am more than happy to do it. JPMorgan 09:33, 2 November 2010 (EDT)
  • I was looking at the source code of the wiki, and under the Featured Article page, it had a paragraph about the featured article. I think that instead of typing or copying/pasting a excerpt every time you have to change the Featured Articles, you could put in an algorithm in wiki that would make it grab a random article of the wiki, and also grab the first few lines. This would make it easier on you, so you don't have to change the main page every day. Greivousfan226
    • We have talk about this a little, and I am not sure how to do it. If you could figure it out, please be my guest!! JPMorgan 15:20, 8 November 2010 (EST)
  • I added two campus maps to the Buildings category but I think a link to at least one of the campus maps may be helpful to someone who is looking at our main page. My reasoning for this is just to make finding a Georgia Tech campus map easier to find. Also if a map is on our site, this keeps someone on our site as opposed to them leaving the site to locate a map somewhere else more convenient. What do you think? cpowell32
    • Great! I think the maps are a great addition and are definitely appropriate for Buzzpedia. Next, hopefully we will add the links to the grid for all of the buildings that are listed in articles. Dn3 21:42, 13 November 2010 (EST)

current assignments and tasks

  • I set them up so that the current assignments part is for things that will be a definite grade in the gradebook and tasks are things that we need to get done just to make the buzzpedia get up to par. Is this the best way to do it? or should we change? JPMorgan 22:41, 27 October 2010 (EDT)
    • I think that is a great way to organize it. I would not change it. However, everyone needs to understand that tasks means getting Buzzpedia up to par so it needs to be constantly checked on.Hyarosh3 19:18, 1 November 2010 (EDT)

I agree , keep it that way. It is the easiest way to organize it. Sandra

Ways to Categorize Buzzpedia Articles

  • I think it would be a great idea to use Athletics, Campus Buildings and Environment, Traditions and Campus Life as category headings for navigation. I think people, places, and events is much too broad to provide any direction. Kdease3 12:55, 10 October 2010 (EDT)
  • Creating three master categories (Athletics, Campus Bldgs, etc.) is a great idea. This gives us some, but not too much organization. Too much organization may add to confusion. --Dn3 13:47, 12 October 2010 (EDT)
  • I agree with the above statement. I feel that it would give us some but not too much organization. Too much organization can sometimes make things more confusing and not helpful. Sometimes less is more. ckelly38
  • How do we want to make our main page more user interactive? Should we model our page after Wikipedia's main page? Can we model it after Wikipedia's main page? (Not sure how we would implement features such as "Today's featured article") Sroka
  • Categories are a great idea, but I feel that we can use more than just those couple... Atheltic buildings, buildings, homecoming, traditions, etc JPMorgan 21:13, 12 October 2010
  • Propose them on the moderator's noticeboard and help get them set up then. Sroka
