Location

The O'Keefe Gymnasium is located on the east side of the Georgia Tech campus. It is right across the street from the well known, Alexander Memorial Coliseum, where all of the home basketball games take place. On one side it is surrounded by mostly athletic fields and buildings and on the other side it is surrounded by the fraternity and sorority houses. It is also literally located right off of interstate 75/85, which makes it very convenient and easy to find.

History

O'Keefe Gymnasium during a game

Back when the O'Keefe Gymnasium was built in the 1950's, it was used as the gym for O'Keefe High School. [1] It was given to Georgia Tech in the 1960's and was used as the location for many club sports on campus. The gym became the home of the Georgia Tech Volleyball team in 1995 and is one of the premier volleyball facilities in the southeast. It is known for its "rowdy atmosphere, excellent sight lines, and loud acoustics." [2]

The Fans

What the O'Keefe Gymnasium lacks in outside beauty, but once you enter the gym the feeling is insane. The gym is called a "band box" because the bleachers rise up from right next to the court to a low ceiling. The band plays at the game and the students get really into it. The rowdy crowds are actually ranked number 27 in the nation, and number one in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The loyal fans stay on their feet the whole game, follow each volley intensely, and yell "Point Tech!" every time the women's volleyball team scores. "From the introductions, to the pep band, to the post match autographs, Georgia Tech is known for their loyal volleyball fans in the South." The volleyball team "feeds off of the crowds' energy" and has won "over 75% of their home games" since they have been at the O'Keefe Gymnasium in 1995. [3]

Renovations

Since 1995, the O'Keefe Gymnasium has undergone various renovations. After the 2003 season, they added a new floor in the gym. Before the 2006 season, they added a new locker room. The largest renovation that the gym underwent was in 2006; $1 million dollars was spent on upgrading the gym. They put in new home and visitor locker rooms, a coaches' lounge, a players' lounge, a training room, and a student-athlete study area. The lady jackets' new lounge was installed with leather couches, big screen televisions, work stations, and a full sized pool table. The team room serves as a location where the team has meetings before and after games and practices. [4] Another facelift went on before the 2010 season. Another new floor was placed down and banners that highlight the volleyball programs' individual and team accomplishments have also been hung around the gym. [5]
