Parking

Georgia Tech Parking and Transportation operates and maintains street parking (permit and metered), parking lots, and parking garages on campus. The majority of these spaces are reserved for students, faculty, and other members of the Georgia Tech community who purchase parking permits.

Permits

Annual permits are sold to students and faculty; these permits are effective from the date of sale to July 31. For fiscal year 2011, the cost of a standard parking permit was set at $632; however, this price may vary depending on the type of vehicle and the association with Georgia Tech[1]. The cost of the permit is prorated if it is cancelled prior to March 31 [2]. The various street parking areas, parkings lots, and parking garages are marked as either West Campus (W) or East Campus (E) zones.

Permit holders must park in their designated zone Monday through Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm. After 5:00pm Monday through Friday and from 5:00pm Friday until 8:00am Monday, permit holders may park in any non-residential areas. This excludes zones E45 and E81, which must be vacated by 6:00am [3].

The upper and lower areas of zone E44 (Lyman Hall and Daniel Lab, respectively) are to be vacated by Georgia Tech students and faculty by 5:00 PM on the Thursday before gameday. Zones E40, E41, E44, E45, E46, E48, E49, E50, E63, E65, ER51, E52, W01, W02, W03, W21, W24, and Visitor's Areas 2 and 3 are to be vacated by Georgia Tech students and faculty by 6:00AM on gameday[4].

On-Campus Transportation

Georgia Tech’s main form of transportation throughout campus consists of bus service routes. Along with busses, white cargo vans: stingerette, run during the day for handicap individuals and are on a “on call” late night transportation service at night.

Stringerette

The Stingerette provides “after-hours” transportation for Georgia Tech students and employees. These shuttles are plain white, windowed E series Ford passenger vans that have yellow and black Georgia Tech cursive “stingerette” decals on the sides. The shuttle services range from Georgia Tech-operated living accommodations, academic buildings and facilities within campus boundaries and the MARTA Midtown Station. The Stingerette is available Monday through Sunday from 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. excluding Institute holidays. Service requests are taken until 6:30 a.m. [5]

Directions to schedule a stingerette shuttle:[6]

  • Call 404.385.RIDE(7433) or visit [www.stingerette.com| Stingerette's online page]  to request a ride.
  • Be ready to provide:
    • The number of people needing a ride.
    • The current location of pick up.
    • The destination of the ride.
  • Stingerette drivers wait only two minutes at any pick-up point (wait in a prominent location).

Stingerette also facilitates a Paratransit Service which serves members of the Georgia Tech community who need transportation assistance on campus due to permanent or temporary mobility impairments. This service operates Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Authorization to use this service must be obtained from the ADAPTS office located in the Student Services Building. To facilitate local adjacent off campus Georgia Tech students and faculty, stingerette accepts "Safe Ride Home Punch Cards." The Safe Ride Home Punch Card provides Stingerette rides from the Home Park and Centennial Place communities. Each punch card allows 10 safe rides home via the Stingerette Nighttime Shuttle. Cards may be purchased at the Parking and Transportation office for $20 each.[7]

The following is a formal Stingerette "Safe Ride Home Disclaimer" to inform patrons of their responsibilities, expectations, and in cases of emergencies:

"Rides and entry into the Stingerette may be denied because intoxication, foul language, or any perceivable risk to the Stingerette driver, passengers, or the vehicle. This also includes general disrespect for the driver or their duties. Riders that are deemed to be in one of these categories will be refused entry into the Stingerette. If the offense occurs while in route, the Stingerette driver will divert to a safe location and the passenger will be asked to exit the vehicle. If any of the aforementioned situations occur, the Stingerette driver will notify the Georgia Tech Police Department and request their assistance.
Stingerette and Parking and Transportation Services reserves the right to deny transportation to any institution or establishment that operates contrary to the mission of the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Georgia state law requires the use of a car seat or booster seat by infants and small children. One is provided in each Stingerette and must be used to transport children."[8]

The Red Route runs from North Avenue Apartments up Cherry Street, around Ferst Drive past McMillan Street, onto Techwood Drive back to North Avenue Apartments. The Green Bus runs north and south of campus. The Green bus' north route boxes around 14th street, Techwood Drive, Hemphill Avenue, and 10th street, goes down State Street onto Ferst Drive. The south side of the Green Buss includes a trip down Tech Parkway near Structural Engineering and Materials Research Labs south west of campus. Schedules and estimated time arrivals of the Tech Trolly, Red Routes, Blue Routes, and Green Routes can be seen at Nextbus.com NextBus. A lot of smart-phone users at Georgia Tech take advantage of the "GT bus-tracker" and "GT iPhone app" applications to track transportation services. [9][10]

All passenger windows are dark tinted, and through the middle of the sides are black and yellow honey comb shaped dotted decoys over the windows. The honey comb design is a back drop for the mascot Buzz. On the left side of Buzz are back and yellow Georgia Tech cursive "Stinger" decals. "GT" yellow decals are on the front of the buss left and right of the air intake under the driver windows. The back of the Buss has formal black font written "Georgia Tech."
The interior of the busses are blue with inter-school advertisement on the top headboards on each side of the buss. The seats are blue tightly stitched cloth seats side by side along aluminum poles for support. On the top half of each seat is the iconic "GT" symbol in yellow and black.
The tech trolly's main theme color is yellow. The exterior is a yellow paint with white accents. The front of the tech trolly is distinguished by a center piece headlight in the center under the driver's window. The sides of the vehicle has "Georgia Tech" decals as decoration.
