Georgia Tech: Satellite Campuses

From Buzzpedia
Jump to: navigation, search

Georgia Tech's ambition to serve the growing potential of scholars in the country, such as in science and liberal arts, is manifested in its expansion from its central location in Atlanta. The Institute has a campus in Savannah, Georgia along with other campuses in foreign nations like Metz, France; Athlone, Ireland; Shanghai, China; and Singapore. [1]

These satellite campuses offer various undergraduate courses along with graduate courses on a Doctoral and Masters level. However, they do not offer the vast array of courses that the main campus offers. They remain similar to the main campus and maintain the high quality of education. In addition, they also offer co-op, internships and research opportunities like main campus.

Georgia Tech: Savannah

Georgia Tech Savannah

Georgia Tech Savannah (GTS) was opened in 1998. This campus primarily offered Electrical Engineering degrees through the Georgia Tech Engineering Program (GTREP). Since then it has grown considerably in Southeast by continuing its main aim of uniting education, industry and technology in the region. Currently it offers Georgia Tech Bachelor's degrees in electrical engineering, computer engineering, civil engineering, and mechanical engineering cored with the essential Tech hands-on training.[2]

On a graduate and research level, the campus offers study and research which leads to master's and Ph.D degrees in electrical and computer engineering, civil and environmental engineering, and mechanical engineering. [3]

Georgia Tech Lorraine

Georgia Tech Lorraine

Georgia Tech Lorraine (GTL) is a located in Lorraine, France. It was instituted in 1990 as a non-profit corporation under the French Law. This campus is the European branch of Georgia Tech. The campus is housed in a 50,000 square foot building at the Metz Technopole in close proximity to other universities and research facilities. It is mainly a graduate and research institute but offers study abroad programs to undergraduates in specific courses. [4]

Undergraduate options include a semester or a year abroad program and an undergraduate summer program for students majoring electrical and computer engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, industrial engineering, management, and international affairs.[5]

GTL offers graduate degrees from Georgia Tech in electrical and computer engineering, computer science and mechanical engineering. Double degree programs, leading to a Master's in science from Georgia Tech and a Master Professionale degree from one of seven French engineering institution, are also offered. [6]

Georgia Tech Shanghai

Shanghai Jiao Tong University

Unlike the rest of the satellite campuses, this campus is a joint partnership with Shanghai Jiao Tong University, another leading engineering university comprised of several campuses located in Shanghai, China. Starting May 2006, Georgia Tech graduate courses have been taught at SJTU by Georgia Tech faculty during the fall and summer semesters as opposed to the fall and spring as other campuses. [7]

At STJU, students can purse dual master's degree from both institutions-a non-thesis master's degree from the School of ECE at Georgia Tech and a thesis master's degree from the School of Electronic, Information and Electronic Engineering at SJTU.[8]

However, Georgia Tech Shanghai accepts a limited number of students from outside China who will only pursue a Tech master's degree. Co-op and internship opportunities are available with multinational companies only after a semester of study in Georgia Tech Shanghai.[9]
