Buzzpedia:Style Guide Analysis Assignment

This assignment asks you to work in small groups to analyze selections from selected style guides. Our goal is to better understand the sorts of rules that style guides provide for writers, and how different organizations shape their style guides to meet the needs of their particular rhetorical situations.

Each group needs to answer the following questions about your assigned style guide selections.

  1. Compare the table of contents of your style guide to wikipedia's style guide. What similar subjects do the two style guides cover? What subjects does the Wikipedia style guide cover that your style guide neglects? What subjects does your style guide cover that the Wikipedia style guide neglects?
    1. Based on the similarities between Wikipedia's style guide and your assigned style guide, what do you think might be some common questions about writing that the editors of both style guides wanted to answer for their readers? Why might these questions be common for many writers?
    2. Based on the differences between Wikipedia's style guide and your assigned style guide, what do you think might be different about the sort of questions about writing the editors each of the style guides expected their readers to have? How might these differences be explained by the different rhetorical situations that the two different sets of editors were responding to?
  2. What section of the Wikipedia style guide is most similar to the style guide excerpt given to your group? Why? Compare the section of style guide you were assigned to the section of the Wikipedia style guide it is most similar to.
    1. What are some specific guidelines that both style guides provide?
      1. What specific guidelines are given by both style guides in an identical, or nearly identical, fashion?
      2. What specific guidelines appear in both style guides in slightly different ways? Why do you think the editors of each style guide employed the version of this guideline that they did? How might it have best fit their rhetorical situation?
    2. What are some specific guidelines that Wikipedia's style guide gives that the section of your assigned style guide omits? What are some specific guidelines that your assigned section of style guide gives that Wikipedia's style guide omits?
  3. Give one rule from the Wikipedia style guide section most similar to your assigned section of style guide that we should use in our Buzzpedia style guide, and explain why we should adopt this rule.
  4. Give one rule from your assigned section of style guide that we should use in our Buzzpedia style guide, and explain why we should adopt this rule.

Assign one member of your group as the Wiki scribe. Have them enter your group's answers to these questions on the appropriate page for your section and group below. You will receive class participation points based on your group's participation in this assignment.
